In Loving Memory of Vasantididi
“Hello, my singing cuckoo! All well? How was your day?”
These loving, caring words still ring in my ears. They belong to Vasantididi—Vadanti Rao, a senior sadhika of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, whose passing leaves behind a deep sense of loss, gratitude and reverence.
Vasantididi was a melodious singer of devotional songs dedicated to Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, an artiste par excellence, and had also served as an assistant to the Mother’s secretary, Shri Madhav Pandit. She was a person of extraordinary refinement, warmth and devotion.
One of my deepest aspirations during my one-year stay at Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 2010–11, for my post-doctoral work, was to spend time with some of the veteran Ashramites who had the rare privilege of living in the physical nearness of The Mother and of having the Darshan of Sri Aurobindo. That aspiration was wonderfully fulfilled when I had the opportunity to be Vasantididi’s neighbour at Ganapati House—a room that had earlier been given by The Mother to Prof. Kireet Joshi.
Though already in her eighties, Vasantididi possessed a remarkable vitality and dedication. In the late evenings, she would light incense, sit before the photographs of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, meditate, and then begin her work—writing, editing and proofreading—which would often continue until the early hours of the morning.
As I too would be working late into the night, reading, writing and preparing my post-doctoral thesis, we would sometimes have beautiful conversations across the doors of our respective rooms. Her affection was deeply motherly. Many times she would ask whether I had had my lunch or dinner. If I had not, she would lovingly offer me something from her tiffin and make sure that I ate. Sometimes she would share something her sister had brought for her. Such simple gestures revealed the immense warmth of her heart.
There were also many memorable music sessions with her. Her voice carried not merely musical beauty, but something of the devotion that had shaped her entire life.
Our association, however, went back much further. Vasantididi, along with Panditji, had visited us in 1979 and had dinner with our family at our home in Vallabh Vidyanagar.
Years later, when I met her at the Ashram, I would often ask her, with great curiosity, to share her reminiscences of the early years of the Ashram and anecdotes about Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. Her face would light up as she lovingly recalled those precious memories.
Among the many experiences she shared, one remains particularly etched in my heart—her recollection of the Darshan of Sri Aurobindo. What she narrated is beyond my capacity to adequately express in words. She told me that when disciples came for Darshan, Sri Aurobindo would offer pranam to the Divine—the Brahman—in the heart of each disciple.
For me, this was not merely an anecdote. It was a glimpse into a world of spiritual experience that belonged to another era—a world that Vasantididi had herself witnessed and carried within her.
Today, as she leaves the physical world, I feel an immense sense of gratitude to The Mother for having given me the rare opportunity to know such a soul, to live beside her, to listen to her music, to hear her memories and, above all, to experience her affection.
Vasantididi was not merely a senior sadhika whom I happened to know. For a brief but precious period, she became a loving presence in my life—like a gentle bridge between the living memory of the Ashram’s early days and my own journey of seeking and learning.
Her voice, her songs, her affectionate questions, her stories and her luminous memories will remain with me.
My heartfelt pranam to Vasantididi.
May she rest in the loving embrace of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, whose Presence she served, cherished and carried throughout her life.
