A miracle of the speaking silence

 Collated by Tusar Nath Mohapatra

Two Birds from Savitri The moment we utter the very first phrase “dvā suparņā, two birds beautiful of wings”, we are transported to their many-splendoured world; indeed, they immediately become our companions too. What we would analyse as poetry and art and philosophy drops out suddenly and what we would see in the glow and grandeur of its expression is a miracle of the speaking silence and dynamism of the unfathomable peace. We meet in it the Rishi.

Sri Aurobindo’s writings abound in allusions, and Savitri is no exception. Indeed Sri Aurobindo has made lavish use of this poetic tool to enrich the suggestiveness of his word-music and images. We find echoes of the Vedas, Upanishads, Gita and Puranas – but also of Greek and roman mythology, of the Bible, and of lines or phrases from English literature, and from Virgil, Dante, Homer and other great poets. 5:36 PM Wednesday, July 30, 2008

It's exactly like pulling open a curtain: everything is waiting there behind. It's difficult for me to speak during these experiences because French comes to me more spontaneously, and the experiences all happen in English—Sri Aurobindo's power is so much with them... .

Here’s a question: what if one did want to know, as objectively as possible, all that could be documented about Sri Aurobindo’s external life, not in order to critique, reduce, or explain his spiritual greatness by mundane details, but rather because one has a deep love for Sri Aurobindo, and finds everything one learns about the actual external life he led is filled with sweetness and brings an increasing sense of closeness.

But consider the much less important, but still interesting (to some of us), attempt to get at all the available external documentation of, for example, Sri Aurobindo’s outer life in Baroda, i.e. what he did, where he went and when, whom he associated with, what they recorded as their impressions of him, etc. Would the empirical, critical, “scientific” historian’s approach to this specific task produce more reliable results than a hagiographic one? I personally do appreciate the results of the rationalistic approach to this “documentation of external facts” about the saint’s life, meaning just those facts that actually were “on the surface for others to see”. I think the raw tasks of collecting, evaluating and presenting the available physical data, do lend themselves to the empirical, rationalistic approach.

One of the more deeply engrained assumptions of Western liberalism is that we humans can indefinitely increase our capacity to care for others, that we can, with the right effort and dedication, extend our care to wider and wider circles until we envelop the whole species within our ethical regard. It is an inspiring thought. But I’m rather doubtful…

Two of the leading liberal social theorists, Jeremy Rifkin and Peter Singer, think we can overcome factional bias and eventually become one giant tribe. They have different prescriptions for arriving at ethical utopia. Singer, who is perhaps the world’s best known utilitarian philosopher, argues in his book “The Expanding Circle” that the relative neocortical sophistication of humans allows us to rationally broaden our ethical duty beyond the “tribe” — to an equal and impartial concern for all human beings…

Dante was misunderstood. His Divine Comedy is all about the ancient world itself and particularly ancient India. He has mentioned four cardinal points of the ancient world yet to be understood by scholars who are speaking high of him. Purgatory, Ebro, Jerusalem and Gangetic Plain

Light is there all around us; we live, move and have our being in light. Whatever is necessary for us to know, we can know at all times, if only we are sufficiently open to receive it. But our mechanical thoughts and notions hide the light from us; our doubts and misgivings prevent us from accepting the truth when it comes. Thus, we pass our life in darkness and ignorance.

Power is there all around us; it supports our life, our movements, our efforts. Whatever power and strength is required for the work before us, we can get at all times, if only we are sufficiently open and receptive. But our inert passivity or egoistic restlessness cuts us off from the source of all power. Thus, we pass our life in weakness and failure.

Joy is there all around us; the foundation of the whole world play is infinite joy, and our life is a progressive manifestation of it. We have only to open ourselves, and there will be no limit to our joy and bliss. But we limit and bound ourselves by ignorant desires and attachments. Thus, we pass our life in thirst and misery.

Thou art there always by our side, always within us, Mother; all greatness, all glory is Thine. We can have the fullest share of light and power and joy, if only we can sufficiently open ourselves to Thee.
