That is a deep-cut reference for anyone who followed Indian journalism in the late 20th century! Sham Lal’s "The National Sphere" and "Life and Letters" columns in The Times of India were widely considered the ultimate intellectual marathon for readers.
Writing under his initials "Adib" (and later his own name), Sham Lal didn't just write op-eds—he crafted dense, heavily philosophical, and deeply erudite essays. Reading him wasn't just about catching up on the news; it was a rigorous mental workout that required a solid grasp of literature, European philosophy, and political theory.
For decades, navigating his vocabulary and layered arguments was a badge of honor among Delhi and Mumbai intellectuals. It truly belonged to an era of journalism that assumed the reader was willing to sit down with a dictionary and pull apart a text sentence by sentence.
Are you reminiscing about the golden era of the edit page, or is there a particular column or theme of his that you are trying to track down?

Yes, Kabir was deeply into wordplay, but his linguistic games served a profound spiritual purpose. Rather than just trying to be clever, the 15th-century mystic used semantic tricks, sharp riddles, and cosmic jokes to break down the rational mind and force people to look at the universe differently. [1, 2]
His ultimate expression of wordplay is a specific genre of poetry known as ulatbansi (upside-down language). [3, 4]

The Art of Ulatbansi (Upside-Down Verses)

Ulatbansi relies entirely on paradoxes, absurdity, and conceptual reversals. Kabir deliberately flipped the natural order of the world to mock human ignorance and hint at hidden yogic truths. [2, 3]
Some of his most famous examples of wordplay include:
  • "Barse kambal, bheeje paani" (It rains blankets, and the water gets wet).
  • "An ant swallows an elephant" (A riddle about how the tiny human soul/ego can actually swallow the massive physical universe through divine realization).
  • "A cow is milking a calf" or "A fish is flying in the sky while a bird swims in the sea." [2, 5, 6]

Why did he do it?

  • To shock the listener: Kabir despised blind rituals and religious hypocrisy. By dropping a completely absurd sentence, he forced people out of their autopilot thinking. [1, 2, 4]
  • Coding the mystical: Much like a spiritual cipher, his wordplay hid esoteric Hatha-yoga and Hatha-meditation secrets from the uninitiated. To an ordinary person, it sounded like nonsense; to a seeker, it mapped the movement of energy inside the body. [2, 3, 5]
  • The "Twilight Language": He drew from a long tradition of sandhya-bhasha (twilight language) used by earlier Buddhist and Tantric saints, where words exist in a twilight zone between literal meaning and hidden cosmic truths. [2, 7]
By using what scholars call "absurd poetry," Kabir turned language on its head to prove that the ultimate reality cannot be captured by everyday, logical speech. [3]
Would you like me to break down the hidden spiritual meaning behind one of his specific ulatbansi poems, or explore the satirical insults he loved to hurl at the religious elite?

The linear focus on time was intensified dramatically during the Industrial Revolution. As the cultural historian Lewis Mumford pointed out in 1934, the key machine of the modern industrial age was not the steam engine, but the mechanical clock...

While modern industrial life still treats time as a straight track to be managed and spent, comparative philosophy and linguistics show that time can be understood differently both co-existing in a continuous yet confusing cycle. They are the two wings of today, reminding us that while the calendar turns, our lives can only ever be lived in the present moment.
