Nachiketas, the seeker of immortality in the Katha Upanishad, is granted three boons from Yama, the God of Death. He asks for the tranquillity and peace of his father Gautama who had given him away in dejection to Yama. The second boon he entreats Yama for is the secret of “the heavenly Flame” which brings immortality to the seeker. And the third one is the realization of Brahman which alone guarantees immortality to the recipient. Similar are the boons asked for by Savitri, the incarnate of the Supreme Divine Mother. Unlike Savitri of the tale of Satyavan and Savitri as related in the Mahabharata, Savitri of Sri Aurobindo’s epic—Savitri: a Legend and a Symbol—asks for three boons: the first one is Dyumatsena’s sight and kingdom symbolizing higher Consciousness and Light. The second boon asked for is a hundred sons for her own father Aswapathy. The third one is a hundred sons for Satyavan and herself representing the birth of the Supramental race. Ultimately, all these boons point to the establishment of transformed earth inhabited by a new race of Superman.
